Overview of Kanchenjunga base camp trekking

Kanchenjunga is the third-highest mountain in the world at 8,586 meters, and the Kanchenjunga Circuit walk takes hikers to its north and south base camps. It is a remote area trek, so having a good fitness level and some trekking experience is advisable.  However, despite its remoteness, trekkers can gain insight into the way of life of local people and visit Ramtang and Oktang Monasteries. The landscape along the trek is stunning and includes rivers, waterfalls, green meadows, rhododendron, birch, pine forests, and the Yalung Glacier. The majestic mountains also accompany trekkers throughout the journey. Kanchenjunga, situated on the extreme eastern side of Nepal close to the Sikkim border, was previously thought to be the tallest peak in the world until the mid-1800s. The area was closed to trekkers until the mid-1980s. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area protects the region, requiring a special trekking permit. It has helped preserve the area's unique and beautiful flora and fauna in pristine condition. In addition to the central peak of Kanchenjunga, four subsidiary summits exceed 8,000m, and approximately twenty peaks exceed 7,000m. Moreover, there are numerous peaks over 6,000m, and the area also features five major glacial systems. Moreover, trekking in Kanchenjunga is an unforgettable experience that takes trekkers into the heart of the remote, less-traveled Himalayan mountains and valleys. The recent addition of the Great Himalayan Trail to the trekking map promotes tourism in this and other remote areas, opening more teahouses along the route.  While this is positive for local communities, visiting Kanchenjunga may be a good idea before it becomes more popular among trekkers.

How difficult is Kanchenjunga base camp trekking?

The challenging and strenuous Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek takes you through treacherous routes, mountains, and valleys in the extreme northeastern region of Nepal.  Along the journey, you can take in the splendor of the outdoors, see various animals, such as red pandas and Himalayan black bears, and unwind over a campfire under the sparkling stars. It would help if you made the trek's length and the problematic trails, passes, descents, and ascents one of Nepal's most challenging and exciting.  The Tamur and Ghunsa Rivers are followed for the first three days of the journey as the elevation rises from 2200 meters to 3000 meters. The difficulty level increases as you ascend toward the glaciers and pass by imposing mountains like Kanchenjunga and Jannu.  The journey then takes a different path back to Ghunsa after exploring the Kanchenjunga glacier, passing by the Yulung glacier and Sherpa valleys before concluding Tharpu.

What is the best time to visit the Kanchenjunga base camp trek?

The Kanchenjunga circuit trek will be a pleasant trekking route with good weather conditions and a less steep trail.

      Spring (March to May):

The best season to trek is Spring, which lasts from March to May. The weather is clear and dry with comfortable temperatures during the day, ten °C to 20°C at lower elevations.  However, as you ascend, the temperature will decrease, especially at night, and can go below freezing. The weather is stable and predictable, with fewer chances of precipitations.  Along the trail, you will be greeted by rhododendron that blooms in Spring, adding extra beauty to the path.

      Monsoon (June to August):

The monsoon brings heavy rain and thunderstorms to the Kanchenjunga region, which may bring problematic conditions while trekking.  The temperature during the daytime is around 15°C to 25°C, but the humidity is high, making it challenging to trek.  However, unpredictable weather conditions accompany a mesmerizing mountain range view. You must come with preparation and know the weather condition before hitting the trail.

      Autumn (September to November):

Autumn is another excellent trekking season to visit the Kanchenjunga base camp. The weather is dry and clear, with pleasant temperatures during the daytime ranging from 10°C to 20°C.  Besides, the skies are usually clear and offer eye-catching mountain range views. From mesmerizing views and beautiful flora, the trail will be less crowded, making it a better trekking season.

      Winter (December to February):

The weather in Kanchenjunga brings dry and cold weather with temperature that drops below freezing.  The daytime temperatures are around 5 °C to 10°C, but at night, it can go below -10°C. With the occasional snowfall, trekkers can play with snow and make the best of their trekking journey.  The trekker must be prepared with proper equipment and clothing for cold temperatures. The trails are usually less crowded during winter, making it a good time for those who prefer solitude.
