      Overview of Kanchenjunga base camp trekking 

      Kanchenjunga is the third-highest mountain in the world at 8,586 meters, and the Kanchenjunga Circuit walk takes hikers to its north and south base camps. It is a remote area trek, so having a good fitness level and some trekking experience is advisable.  However, despite its remoteness, trekkers can gain insight into the way of life of local people and visit Ramtang and Oktang Monasteries. The landscape along the trek is stunning and includes rivers, waterfalls, green meadows, rhododendron, birch, pine forests, and the Yalung Glacier. The majestic mountains also accompany trekkers throughout the journey. Kanchenjunga, situated on the extreme eastern side of Nepal close to the Sikkim border, was previously thought to be the tallest peak in the world until the mid-1800s. The area was closed to trekkers until the mid-1980s. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area protects the region, requiring a special trekking permit. It has helped preserve the area's unique and beautiful flora and fauna in pristine condition. In addition to the central peak of Kanchenjunga, four subsidiary summits exceed 8,000m, and approximately twenty peaks exceed 7,000m. Moreover, there are numerous peaks over 6,000m, and the area also features five major glacial systems. Moreover, trekking in Kanchenjunga is an unforgettable experience that takes trekkers into the heart of the remote, less-traveled Himalayan mountains and valleys. The recent addition of the Great Himalayan Trail to the trekking map promotes tourism in this and other remote areas, opening more teahouses along the route.  While this is positive for local communities, visiting Kanchenjunga may be a good idea before it becomes more popular among trekkers.

      How difficult is Kanchenjunga base camp trekking?

      The challenging and strenuous Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek takes you through treacherous routes, mountains, and valleys in the extreme northeastern region of Nepal.  Along the journey, you can take in the splendor of the outdoors, see various animals, such as red pandas and Himalayan black bears, and unwind over a campfire under the sparkling stars. It would help if you made the trek's length and the problematic trails, passes, descents, and ascents one of Nepal's most challenging and exciting.  The Tamur and Ghunsa Rivers are followed for the first three days of the journey as the elevation rises from 2200 meters to 3000 meters. The difficulty level increases as you ascend toward the glaciers and pass by imposing mountains like Kanchenjunga and Jannu.  The journey then takes a different path back to Ghunsa after exploring the Kanchenjunga glacier, passing by the Yulung glacier and Sherpa valleys before concluding Tharpu.

      What is the best time to visit the Kanchenjunga base camp trek?

      The Kanchenjunga circuit trek will be a pleasant trekking route with good weather conditions and a less steep trail. 

      Spring (March to May):

      The best season to trek is Spring, which lasts from March to May. The weather is clear and dry with comfortable temperatures during the day, ten °C to 20°C at lower elevations.  However, as you ascend, the temperature will decrease, especially at night, and can go below freezing. The weather is stable and predictable, with fewer chances of precipitations.  Along the trail, you will be greeted by rhododendron that blooms in Spring, adding extra beauty to the path. 

      Monsoon (June to August):

      The monsoon brings heavy rain and thunderstorms to the Kanchenjunga region, which may bring problematic conditions while trekking.  The temperature during the daytime is around 15°C to 25°C, but the humidity is high, making it challenging to trek.  However, unpredictable weather conditions accompany a mesmerizing mountain range view. You must come with preparation and know the weather condition before hitting the trail.

      Autumn (September to November):

      Autumn is another excellent trekking season to visit the Kanchenjunga base camp. The weather is dry and clear, with pleasant temperatures during the daytime ranging from 10°C to 20°C.  Besides, the skies are usually clear and offer eye-catching mountain range views. From mesmerizing views and beautiful flora, the trail will be less crowded, making it a better trekking season. 

      Winter (December to February):

      The weather in Kanchenjunga brings dry and cold weather with temperature that drops below freezing.  The daytime temperatures are around 5 °C to 10°C, but at night, it can go below -10°C. With the occasional snowfall, trekkers can play with snow and make the best of their trekking journey.  The trekker must be prepared with proper equipment and clothing for cold temperatures. The trails are usually less crowded during winter, making it a good time for those who prefer solitude.

      Itinerary

      1Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m)

      Kathmandu city

      You will arrive at Kathmandu terminal airport, and our representative will escort you to your hotel. You can relax to prepare for your walk or spend the rest of the day enjoying the city.

       

      2Day 2: Fly from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur and drive to Ilam (1,400m)

      You’ll board a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur in eastern Nepal. You will travel to Ilam from Bhadrapur, a small town renowned for its tea gardens and picturesque surroundings. The rest of the day can be used to explore the city and prepare for your adventure.

      3 Day 3: Drive from Ilam to Taplejung (1,840m)

      Today, you will drive from Ilam to Taplejung, the starting point of your trek. The drive takes around 6-7 hours and offers stunning views of the mountains and rural Nepali villages. You will spend the night in a local tea house in Taplejungg.

      4Day 4: Trek from Taplejung to Chirwa (1,270m)

      Your trek officially begins today. You will start by descending towards the Tamor River and cross it over a suspension bridge. The trail goes through small villages and lush forests before reaching the Gurja Khola. You will cross the river again and climb to Chirwa, a small town with tea houses and shops.

      5Day 5: Trek from Chirwa to Sekathum (1,600m)

      Today’s trek takes you through beautiful forests and along the banks of the Tamar River. Before arriving in Sekathum, a small town with modest amenities, you must cross several suspension bridges and pass through several small settlements.

      6Day 6: Trek from Sekathum to Amjilosa (2,510m)

      Today, the trail becomes steeper as you climb toward the Ghunsa River. You will pass through dense forests and cross several waterfalls before reaching Amjilosa, a small village with a few tea houses.

      7Day 7: Trek from Amjilosa to Gyabla (2,730m)

      Today’s trek is a gradual uphill climb through rhododendron forests and along the Ghunsa River. You will cross a few small streams before reaching Gyabla, a small village with tea houses.

      8 Day 8: Trek from Gyabla to Ghunsa (3,595m)

      Today’s trek takes you through beautiful forests and along the river. You will pass through several small villages before reaching the village of Ghunsa, which is the last permanent settlement on the trek. Ghunsa is a beautiful village surrounded by snowy peaks with a few tea houses and shops.

      9Day 9: Rest day in Ghunsa

      Today is a rest day in Ghunsa to acclimatize to the altitude. You can spend the day exploring the village or taking a short hike to nearby viewpoints.

      10Day 10: Trek from Ghunsa to Kambachen (4,050m)

      Today’s trek takes you to higher altitudes, and the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. You will pass through beautiful forests and along the river before reaching Kambachen, a small village with a few tea houses and shops.

      11Day 11: Trek from Kambachen to Lhonak (4,790m)

      Today’s trek is another challenging day as you climb higher toward the Kanchenjunga Glacier. You will cross several streams and pass through rocky terrain before reaching Lhonak, a small village surrounded by snow-capped peaks. You will spend the night in a basic tea house.

      12Day 12 : Trek from Lhonak to Kanchenjunga Base Camp (5143 m) 3 hours

      Today, we head towards Kanchenjunga Base Camp following the trail along the glaciers on the northern ridges. The camp is also known as Pang Pema from where we get the mesmerizing and spectacular view of Mt Kanchenjunga (8586m) along with the skyline filled with snow-capped mountain ranges bordering Nepal-India and Nepal-Tibet. Overnight in Kanchenjunga Base Camp.

      13Day 13: Trek from KBC to Ghunsa (3595 m)

      After the amazing experience in KBC, we retrace our trail to Ghunsa, enjoying the spectacular view of different mountains. Descending past Lhonak and Khangpachen while walking on the moraines of Kanchenjunga Glacier and Kumbhakarna Glacier, we arrive in Ghunsa. Overnight in Ghunsa

      14Day 14: Trek from Kambachen to Ghunsa (3,595m)

      Today, you will descend further toward Ghunsa. The trail is mostly downhill, but there are a few steep sections. You will spend the night in a tea house in Ghunsa.

      15Day 15: Trek from Ghunsa to Sele Le (4,290m)

      Today’s trek takes you to Sele Le, a high pass offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The ascent is steep and challenging, but the views are worth the effort.

      16Day 16: Trek from Sele Le to Tseram (3,870m)

      Today, you will descend towards Tseram, passing through beautiful forests and along the Simbuwa Khola. You will spend the night in a tea house in Tseram.

      17Day 17: Trek from Tseram to Tortong (2,995m)

      Today’s trek is a gradual descent toward Tortong. You will pass through several small villages and forests before reaching Tortong, a small town with tea houses and shops.

      18Day 18: Trek from Tortong to Yamphudin (2,080m)

      Today, you will descend further toward Yamphudin. The trail is mostly downhill, but there are a few steep sections. You will pass through small villages and beautiful forests before reaching Yamphudin, where you will spend the night in a tea house.

      19Day 19: Trek from Yamphudin to Khebang (1,910m)

      Today’s trek is a gradual descent toward Khebang. You will pass through beautiful forests and small villages before reaching Khebang, where you will spend the night in a tea house.

      20Day 20:Drive from Khebang to Bhadrapur

      Today, you will drive back to Bhadrapur and stay in a hotel.

      21Day 21: Fly from Bhadrapur to Kathmandu

      Kathmandu city

      You will take a domestic flight from Bhadrapur to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel.

       

      22Day 22: Departure from Kathmandu

      Today is the last day of your trip. You will be taken to the airport before your trip home or to your next location.
