Island Peak

Overview

Imja TSe

Island Peak Climbing in Nepal is one of the most rewarding high-altitude adventures available to trekkers and aspiring mountaineers. Standing at 6,189 meters (20,305 feet) above sea level, Island Peak—officially known as Imja Tse—sits at the heart of the Everest region and offers a genuine Himalayan summit experience without requiring years of technical climbing background.

First climbed in 1953 by members of the British Everest Expedition, Island Peak takes its evocative name from the way it appears to rise like an island from a sea of glaciers when viewed from the village of Dingboche. Today it ranks as one of Nepal’s most sought-after trekking peaks, attracting thousands of international climbers each year who combine the iconic Everest Base Camp route with a genuine high-altitude summit push.

What sets Island Peak apart from other Himalayan climbing objectives is its accessibility: the approach trek passes through Sherpa villages, ancient monasteries, and the dramatic moraine landscape of the Khumbu, while the summit day itself delivers a true mountaineering experience—crampons, fixed ropes, a 50-degree snow face—culminating in panoramic views of Lhotse, Makalu, Baruntse, and Ama Dablam. For fit and determined trekkers, this is the ideal first 6,000-meter peak.
